WATER & SANITATION


Safety managed Water, sanitation and hygiene services are an essential part of preventing and protecting human health during infectious disease outbreaks, including current COVID-19 pandemic. Safely managed WASH services are also critical during the recovery phase of a disease outbreak to mitigate secondary impacts on community livelihoods and well beings.

 

On the other side, Solid Waste Management has become one of the most essential services for maintaining the quality of life in the Urban Areas & for ensuring better standards of health & living hood. In West Bengal, there are 127 Municipal Bodies in 23 districts of West Bengal. Together, these local bodies generate 8,675 MT (Metric Ton) of waste per day and the per capita waste generation is approximately 360.4 gms per day (WBPCB, 2006). But still there is no proper management of this huge volume of solid waste.

 

Role of Digambarpur Angikar:

 

  • Healthy Living for Everyone forever at Patharpratima Island: In partnership with Water for People, earlier massive initiative had been taken to improve sanitation & hygiene practices and preventing and reducing water and vector borne diseases. As a part of this intervention, Digambarpur Angikar had installed tube wells at remote villages & schools. School sanitation programme includes menstrual hygienic education awareness, emphasizing hygiene practice and maintenance of asset created through formation and strengthening of individual WATSAN committee. Potential village youths [Jalabandhu] had been trained on tube well maintenance and repairing followed by linkages with job opportunity. All existing services are available within door steps of the villagers.

 

  • Household Pipe water supply project: In partnership with Water for People, at present 500 household at Digambarpur Village still have been connected with existing pipe line water supply. Beneficiaries are contributing monthly for getting this pipe line safe water. This chargeable water connection has been a model in the state.

 

  • Solid Waste Management: Being an empanel Micro Planning Organization with SUDA, Dep’t of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Govt of West Bengal, Angikar is involved preparation of DPR on SWM with 18 Municipal Towns in West Bengal [4 in South 24 Pargans, 5 in Hooghly and 9 in North 24 Parganas] followed by impart handholding training for different level stakeholders to ensure 100% door to door segregated waste collection and effective scientific solid waste management.

 

  • Total Sanitation Programme under Swatch Bharat Mission [Mission Nirmal Bangla]: A number of more than 11,000 IHHL have been constructed by Digambarpur Angikar in eight different blocks in South 24 Parganas District. Local villagers, Panchayat and Block authorities came forward to declare their respective Panchayat as OD free, Nirmal panchayat.
