Child abuse is a global phenomenon. It occurs in all countries and in all societies. It involves the physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect of children. It is nearly always preventable. In Sundarban, many children’s are deprived of their basic rights and vulnerable to all forms of abuse and exploitations.
Sundarban region under ,North and South 24 Parganas district are two most worst affected source districts in the state of West Bengal, where the buying and selling of minor girls, girl child mission & girls engages as domestic works is highest. The socio-economic scenario of Sundarban delta is very poor. Most of the people live below the poverty line. Poor villagers believe that early marriage can secure a stable future for their daughters.
West Bengal, especially remote Islands in Sundarban region hosts large percentage of country’s child marriage. Percentage of under 18 child brides in West Bengal is around 31.6%. Girls have little access to education. They become victim of early marriage, trafficking and critical reproductive health hazards. Girls who marry earlier are less likely to be educated or taught about their reproductive issues and due to this pregnancy related death are known to be the leading cause of mortality among married girls between 15-18 years of age. Many girls trafficked in the sex trade through fake marriage. Nutritional status of poor vulnerable girls is also a serious threat to their lives.
